Abstract.
This study explores some determinants of international newventures in Spain. As in previous research for the US and UK,important factors that explain why a firm becomes aninternational new venture result the technological level and thepsychic and geographic distances from export markets. ForSpanish businesses however, international alliances were foundnot to be a relevant factor.
This highlights an aspect of theinternational new venture model still uncovered in the literature,and that is the effects on internationalization that being part of amajor multinational economic agreement (like the EuropeanUnion) provokes. A number of interesting implications aredrawn from the results presented regarding public policies toencourage international development among SMEs.Key Words: International New Ventures, SMEs, Internationalization, Spain
