ABSTRACT
This article is based on the work experience developed with livestock producers of the Region of the Bío Bío with the purpose of designing participatory models for contract farming. This study used a methodological strategy that combined statistical analysis of 752 productive diagnoses of assistance technical program (SAT) of INDAP with the information obtained by 353 questionnaires applied a local producers to identify its perceptions about contract farming. Using an expert panel and benefit integrated approach; this research defines critical elements in the design of the contracts.

These elements are coordination, motivation and costs of transaction to determine price base, delivery place and transportation responsibilities, technical assistance required by the producer and contract formalities. These models of contracts were validated utilizing the choice experiment method. The results of this research demonstrated that the contracts require of commitment and transparency in the management of the information to strengthen the relationships between producers and agroindustry. A general procedure for their design is established, that implies systematic production data harvesting and collaborative work among producers, agroindustry and research centers for a most efficient and adequate elaboration of contracts to the characteristics of local livestock systems.
